Ganglion Cysts of the Hand
What is it?
Ganglion cysts of the hand are very common lumps within the hand and wrist that occur next to joints or tendons. ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled sack that forms as a herniation from a joint capsule or tendon injury and are most commonly found on the back of the hand or wrist. These cysts can appear, disappear, and change in size and many do not require treatment, however, if the cyst becomes painful or interferes with function of the wrist then several treatment options may be considered. Though the cause is unknown it is most common in younger people between the ages of 15 and 40 years, and women are more likely than men to develop one.
Symptoms
The cyst typically forms a firm bump that varies and changes in size depending on activity. Most cysts do not cause pain, however if pressure is present on the nerve due to the cyst pain, tingling, and muscle weakness may be felt.
Treatment
Not all cysts require treatment. Those that do not cause pain or limit motion of the wrist joint can simply be observed and may go away over time. A painful cyst can be drained with a needle called aspiration or may require surgery to remove the cyst. The outpatient procedure is known as Ganglion Cyst Removal.
