As a highly skilled specialist in surgical procedures involving the spine, Dr. Stephen P. Courtney has established an excellent reputation with his professional colleagues and patients. He is a board-certified, fellowship- trained orthopedic spine surgeon and the founder of the Spine Division at Plano Orthopedic Sports Medicine & Spine Center. He has been practicing medicine in Plano since 1995 and has developed a practice exclusively for neck and back disorders and surgical procedures, if indicated and needed.
Dr. Courtney is known for his straightforward, honest approach and operates only in crystal-clear indications and with proven techniques – a hallmark of his practice that has earned him the respect and admiration of his medical peers. He was recently honored by D Magazine as one of the “Best Doctors in Dallas” and by Texas Monthly Magazine as a “Texas Super Doctor.”
Dr. Courtney has shown a commitment to excellence in academics, athletics and leadership throughout high school, college and medical school. In high school, he was junior and senior class president, Salutatorian of his graduating class, the Louisiana Boys State representative, and a member of the Louisiana All-State basketball team. In college, he graduated summa cum laude from Northeast Louisiana University, where he was also an intramural basketball champion.
A native of Louisiana, Dr. Courtney received his medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical School, where he received the Howmedica Biomechanic Award and the Louisiana Orthopedic Association Award. He also placed fourth in the World Congress for student research competition.
After a residency at Texas A&M University Medical Center, Dr. Courtney completed further specialty training in a fellowship at the Florida Neck & Back Institute in Gainesville, Florida. Dr. Courtney’s credentials are outstanding. He has been Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at the Medical Center of Plano and a member of the hospital’s Executive Committee and Operating Room Committee.
He is a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, a member of North American Spine Society, and a member of the Texas Spine Society. He has five children and enjoys mountain bike racing and Louisiana cooking.
