A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dr. John M. Crates is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in arthroscopic surgery and surgery of the foot and ankle.

A graduate of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Dr. Crates received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in Memphis. He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis and pursued further specialty training there with a fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery.

In his current practice, Dr. Crates provides treatment for patients with both general orthopedic problems and more specialized foot and ankle conditions (texasfootandankle.com). Dr. Crates developed the Texas Foot and Ankle Center at Plano Orthopedic, which is well-known for providing expert care for a wide range of medical conditions related to the foot and ankle, from bunions to sports injuries, trauma, and major reconstructions including ankle replacements.

Dr. Crates, a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and an active member of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society. He is a member of the medical staff of several hospitals, including Baylor Plano, Baylor Frisco, the Day Surgery Center of Plano, Presbyterian Hospital of Plano, Preston Plaza Surgery Center, and the Medical Center of Plano.

Dr. Crates served as the Vice Chief of Orthopedics at the Medical Center of Plano during 2001 and as Chief of Orthopedics during 2002. He has also served on administrative medical staff committees at Presbyterian Hospital of Plano and has served as the Chairman of the Quality Assurance Committee at the Parker Road Surgery Center since 2000.

Dr. Crates enjoys lecturing and publishing on orthopedic-related topics. He recently wrote a chapter in a text for the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society.
