The hip joint is made up of two bones, the pelvis and the femur and is known as a ball and socket joint that allows the upper leg to move front to back and side to side. The ball is actually the head or rounded end of the femur bone that fits snugly in the concave depression known as the socket. The joint is the largest weight bearing joint in the body and is surrounded by strong ligaments and muscles.
