What Kind of Therapy is Needed for Bicep Tendinitis?

Bicep tendinitis is a serious and painful condition. In case you are not familiar with this condition, it occurs when the tendon located in the upper part of the bicep muscle becomes inflamed or irritated.

Many people who have bicep tendinitis first notice it as pain or limited mobility in the shoulder and the upper arm area. Anyone can be affected by this condition, but it’s most common in people who regularly use these muscles, such as people who workout regularly or athletes, especially tennis players. However, any person can sustain an injury that leads to this condition, though it most commonly stems from some kind of regular overuse.

If you have or think you may have this condition, it’s a good idea to seek medical attention. Luckily, there are bicep tendinitis therapy options that you can try, as well as other general treatments. While surgery can be useful in severe cases, it’s a good idea to exhaust all other options first.

Rest and Relaxation

To start off with, one of the most common types of bicep tendinitis therapy isn’t really therapy at all.

In mild cases, your doctor may simply recommend that you rest and take it easy. With the help of a health care professional, you can figure out what activity or action is causing your bicep tendinitis. Then, you will know which activity or action to take a short break from.

Once your break is over and you’re feeling better, you can be more careful in the future to avoid overusing this part of the arm and suffering from the condition again.

Physical Therapy

If your condition is more severe, or you find that it keeps coming back, then your doctor may recommend physical therapy as a form of bicep tendinitis therapy.

Physical therapy typically consists of exercises that are designed to strengthen this part of the arm, making it more resistant to bicep tendinitis in the future. Gentle stretching to help restore agility in the muscle may also be used.

Steroid Therapy

In some cases, your doctor may recommend steroid injections, often in conjunction with other forms of therapy.

The most common steroid used is cortisone, which can help with reducing inflammation.

As you can see, you have many options to help you recover from bicep tendinitis. Talk with a health care professional to find the best option for your specific needs.
