What is a Rotator Cuff injury?

One of the many parts that make up the shoulder is the rotator cuff. A rotator cuff is a group of tendons and muscles that firmly holds the top of the upper arm bone in the shoulder socket. When there is a movement of the arm or shoulder, these tendons and muscles keep the shoulder stable and allow it to rotate safely. The rotator cuff is a crucial part of the shoulder joint as it enables you to lift and rotate your arms while stabilizing the joint.

Common Rotator Cuff Injuries

Two of the most common rotator cuff injuries that we see at Plano Orthopedic are rotator cuff tendonitis and rotator cuff tear. Rotator cuff tendonitis is irritation or inflammation in the tendons or muscles of the shoulder joint due to repetitive motion over the head. This type of injury is commonly seen with activities such as swimming or throwing a ball. These types of activities over time can lead to a rotator cuff tear.

A rotator cuff tear can be either a complete tear or a partial tear. With a complete tear or full-thickness tear, the tendon is pulled off from the bone supporting it altogether. A partial tear happens when a tendon that is supporting the rotator cuff is damaged or frayed. A tear can happen with acute injuries, such as lifting a heavy object or taking a fall.

Symptoms and Signs of Rotator Cuff Injury

The symptoms of a rotator cuff injury can vary from person to person. However, some of the common signs are:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Limited mobility or ability to move the arm
  • Cracking or grating sounds when rotating or moving the arm
  • Persistent pain that gets worse with lifting over the head
  • Pain that causes trouble sleeping, especially on the injured side

Some symptoms of a rotator cuff injury can be similar to those of other conditions or health problems. It’s best to consult your physician for diagnosis if you have one or more of these symptoms.

When to Consult a Doctor

If your pain gets worse, interferes with your regular activities, or makes sleeping difficult, it’s to see a healthcare provider about your injury. It’s important to note that early treatment may prevent mild cases from becoming a severe problem later on.
