What is Arthroscopic Bankart Repair?

Physically active people might experience a wide array of injuries. In many instances, a tear in a component of the shoulder joint known as the labrum is a quite common pain-inducing problem that precipitates individuals to seek help from an orthopedic specialist. Should a labrum tear progress, said condition might elicit a condition known as a Bankart lesion, which may indicate the need for a corrective procedure.

Plano Orthopedic Ports Medicine and Spine Center, sometimes abbreviated as POSMC performs arthroscopic bankart repair in Allen TX and surrounding regions and invites you to read the following brief article about the condition and remedial endeavor.

Bankart Lesions

Bankart lesions commonly occur in persons who have sustained shoulder dislocations. Specifically, the lesion is known medically as a torn inferior glenohumeral ligament.

Causes

Shoulder dislocations and subsequent bankart lesions usually occur following some type of shoulder trauma. Common precipitating factors include contact sports injuries, automobile accidents and severe falls.

Physical Manifestations

Arguably, the most common symptom is discomfort that is typically exacerbated when you are forced to use the impacted shoulder. Other manifestations you may experience include a feeling of instability, weakness and difficulty moving the shoulder in question.

Arthroscopic Bankart Repair

This surgical procedure is typically performed by an orthopedic surgeon who inserts bone anchors into the glenoid cavity, which are utilized to help reattach the portion of torn labrum.

Surgical Considerations

This type of procedure is performed using general anesthesia, which means you will be asleep during surgery. Though the intervention is usually completed within one hour, you will likely spend that night recovering inside hospital.

The Recovery Process

You will need to undergo physical therapy following surgery to help you regain strength and mobility in the impacted shoulder. In many instances, this process can begin within several weeks after the procedure. That said, the recovery process varies among patients. On average, however, you should expect to regain full strength and range of motion anywhere from three months to a year after the operation.

Benefits Of The Arthroscopic Procedure

Arthroscopic repair is preferred by surgeons and patients alike as an alternative to a major complicated full open shoulder repair be3cause the former intervention is less complicated, produces a reduced chance of complications and a faster recovery period comprised of less pain and quicker healing time.

COVID-19 Update

Updated March 26, 2020

Plano Orthopedic, in unison with the CDC and other governmental agencies is committed to providing our patients with the highest quality care while supporting social distancing and protective measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.  The health and safety of our patients, employees and their families is our highest priority.

Office Schedule

Our office is open and operating on a limited schedule to provide in-person critical care to our patients. Currently, we are transitioning our non-critical, in-person appointments to a telehealth platform for immediate care or scheduling appointments to a future date.

Telehealth Visits

Telehealth visits allow a patient to be cared for by our physicians and providers through video and audio technology.  You will then receive a link that you can utilize from either a computer (with video and audio capability), smart devices, or tablet.

Elective Surgeries

In accordance with governmental recommendations, all elective surgical procedures will be postponed until April 22nd. We are in the process of contacting our patients to reschedule for a later date.

Patients with urgent needs, may be scheduled sooner, but only after consultation with their provider. Please anticipate a call from our clinical teams.

Safety Screenings

For those patients with urgent needs, we are asking you NOT to present yourself in our office if you are feeling unwell, have a fever, cough, shortness of breath or have come in contact with a person who has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. Please contact us to reschedule your appointment. We will also be screening all patients upon entry and are asking that patients over age 18 do not bring a visitor with them. Please also wash your hands upon entering and exiting our facility and practice social distancing in the lobby.

We Appreciate your Cooperation and Understanding

We sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work together to protect our patients and staff. We hope you are confident in Plano Orthopedics as we expand our health and safety measures during this time, while continuing to provide care to our patients.
