Spondylolisthesis is a spinal condition in which damage to the bones or joints are causing the vertebrae to slip forward and distort the spinal cord. This condition causes lower back pain and usually occurs with general aging due to the weakening of the bones, joints, and ligaments. Spondylolisthesis can also be cause by genetics or overuse injuries sue to sports like gymnastics, football and other activities that put stress one the lumbar spine.
What are the symptoms of Spondylolisthesis?
Some people may not experience symptoms of this condition and others may not even be aware that they have it. However, those that do experience symptoms, low back pain is the most common one. The pain may extend down to the thighs as well. Other symptoms may include muscle spasms in the hamstring area, stiffness in the back, pain with bending, or difficulty being on your feet for long periods of time.
Treatment of Spondylolisthesis
You doctor will discuss your treatment options based on their recommendation. Age, present symptoms, and severity will play a part in the type of treatment that is recommended. Many physicians will start with non-surgical treatments before recommending surgery. Conservative treatments will start with resting and taking a break from sports and physical activity. Anti-inflammatory medications can help reduce pain and swelling. Physical therapy can help with flexibility and strength of surrounding muscles. In some cases, a back brace can limit movement and allow for the area to heal. If all of these treatment methods are exhausted and the pain is still present, surgery may be recommended.
