What is it?

Basal Joint Oseoarthritis is a condition that irritates or destroys a joint due to degeneration or wear and tear is known as osteoarthritis. Basal joint osteoarthritis specifically affects the joint at the base of the thumb, the joint that allows the thumb to pivot and swivel.

Symptoms

The most common symptom is pain at the joint and is noticed especially when trying to grip or pinch an object. The thumb may have a grinding sensation, feel weak and stiff, and in some cases may become deformed.

Treatment

Treatment options include cortisone injections, NSAID’s, use of a splint and in some cases surgery.
