Treating De Quervain's tenosynovitis in Plano, Frisco, McKinney and Allen

What is it?

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a painful condition affecting the thumb side of your wrist and occurs when the tendons become irritated or constricted. It will probably hurt every time you turn your wrist, grab anything or make a fist. It’s caused by overuse, especially activities that require forceful bending and extending of the wrist, occasionally can be caused by direct trauma to the wrist.

Symptoms can include pain and tenderness over the thumb side of the wrist, sometimes a catching sensation, gripping objects with the hand is painful and there may be a firm nodule felt over the point of tenderness.

Treatment options include rest, splinting of the wrist and thumb, corticosteroid injections, anti-inflammatory medications and a cold compress for swelling. If conservative treatment options are not successful, surgery may be recommended.
