Muscle Strains of the Hip
What is it?
Muscle strains of the hip are typically an injury caused by overstretching or tearing of the fibers, a fall or direct blow to the hip or overuse in one or more of the muscles that attach at the hip joint. They frequently occur in athletic activities and your chances increase if you had a prior injury or if you did not properly warm up and stretch the muscles before the exercise or activity.
Symptoms
Symptoms include pain, swelling, and loss of strength in the affected area. These symptoms typically worsen with continued activity or use of the injured muscle.
Treatment
In general, most hip strains can be treated with rest, ice, compression with either shorts or a wrap bandage, anti-inflammatory medications and a physical therapy or rehab program designed to restore the range of motion and strength It’s also important to avoid the activity that caused the pain or injury for at least 10-14 days to allow proper healing to take place.
