Tibial Fractures: The tibia is the major bone of the lower leg, commonly called the shin bone. In general, the tibia is the most common long bone fracture in your body. It can occur anywhere along the bone between the ankle and knee ranges from small cracks to a full break that causes the bone to completely separate. The most common cause is a high impact collision or trauma to the leg such as a car accident or a fall.
Most commonly patients will complain of pain, the inability to walk or bear weight on the leg, deformity of the leg, bone may protrude through the skin and an occasional loss of feeling may occur in the foot.
Treatment options vary but include rest, immobilization of the leg with a cast or brace, anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. More severe fractures require surgery.
