Treating Ankle Sprains in Plano, Frisco, McKinney and AllenWhat is it?

Ankle Sprains are a very common injury. Approximately 25,000 people each day experience this condition. They can happen to athletes or non-athletes, children and adults. It occurs when one or more ligaments, which are fibrous bands that provide joint stability, have been over stretched or torn from either excessive force or sudden twisting during a physical activity, a blow to the ankle directly, or even simply stepping on an uneven surface wrong. The foot typically twists, rolls or turns beyond its normal range of motions causing the injury to happen.

Symptoms

Physicians have 3 different degrees of ankle sprains to classify how mild or severe the sprain is based on how badly the ligament is damaged or torn. Symptoms usually include, pain immediately following the twisted joint, swelling, bruising or possibly the inability to weight bear (stand or walk) on that foot.

Treatment

In most cases acute ankle sprains that are mild can be treated with the RICE method, rest, ice, compression and elevation, and also non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications to decrease pain and swelling. Depending on the degree of the injury, a brace, cast, or walking boot may be needed. Early rehabilitation either a home exercise program or at a physical therapy clinic will help improve range of motion of the joint and speed the healing time. These may include stretching, strength training, and balance exercises to improve stability and further prevent injury. In some more severe cases surgery may be required to repair complete tears or fractures.
