Hammertoe

Treating Hammertoe in Plano, Frisco, McKinney and AllenWhat is it?

Hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toes. In this condition the toe is bent at the middle joint, so that is resembles a hammer. Initially, hammer toes are flexible and can be corrected with simple measures, but if left untreated they can become stiff and rigid, thus requiring surgery to correct the problem. This condition is often a result of muscles and tendons of the toe tightening and shortening in certain types of feet, or by wearing shoes that are too small. Injury or arthritis can also be a cause of hammertoe.

Symptoms

Treatment will vary depending on the stage of the condition. Conservative treatments include wearing shoes that fit properly, using orthotics, or padding calluses. Surgical intervention may be necessary if conservative treatments don’t help.
